For National Nutrition Month recognizing the significance of allergy awareness is crucial. Recently, we had the privilege of conversing with Micaa’ Thomas, a professional golfer and accomplished author, about her latest book, "Penny and the Peanut." This enlightening children's book delves into the realities of living with a peanut allergy.

Micaa’ holds a degree in Visual Effects and Animation from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). Alongside her accomplishments as a professional golfer and author, she passionately pursues her artistic endeavors in painting and writing during her leisure time. Additionally, Micaa’ actively engages organizations such as Sisters Across America, National Links Trust, and the Bible Study Group Sister Global Ministry.

How have you contributed to the field of Public Health?

Micaa’ Thomas: My contribution to the field of Public Health has been the book, “Penny and the Peanut”.

In 2022, Texas Children’s Hospital endorsed the book and Dr. Sara Anvari, the leading Immunologist and Allergist deemed it as a medical guide for kids with and without food allergies.

What is your favorite quote? Why?

Micca’ Thomas: My favorite quote is, “One raindrop raises the ocean”.

Every small action, no matter how seemingly insignificant, can contribute to a larger outcome or result. Just as each raindrop eventually adds up to form an ocean, every individual effort or contribution can have an impact when combined with others.

Why did you choose your profession/career path?

Micaa’ Thomas: I chose to become a professional golfer because there are less than 1% of African American golfers that compete professionally on tour.

This has been my dream since I was 10 years old. I believe it is a wonderful thing to be able to do what you love while being a role model for young kids everywhere.

Empowering everyone to play a role in the advancement of public health is essential, regardless of their specific profession. Each individual has the potential to make meaningful contributions to the well-being of society. Whether through raising awareness, advocating for healthier policies, supporting community initiatives, or simply adopting healthier lifestyle choices, everyone can play a part in promoting public health and creating a safer, more resilient future for all.
