Sorángel Rodríguez-Velázquez is not your ordinary chef. Armed with a PhD in Chemistry, she has seamlessly blended her love for food and health into a career as a wellness chef.

Her journey began with her understanding of cooking as a series of chemical reactions, a concept she passionately conveyed to college students for over a decade.

Driven by her passion, Sorángel transitioned into entrepreneurship, applying her scientific knowledge to help others lead healthier lives through food.

Question: Who inspires you? Why?

Response: The individuals who inspire me are my high school chemistry teacher and my grandmother. My teacher inspired me with their drive for excellence, instilling in me a passion for learning and striving for the best. Meanwhile, my grandmother’s dedication and love for others through food deeply influenced me, showing me the power of nourishing both body and soul with care and kindness.


Question: How have your culinary creations contributed to the realm of public health, and what strategies do you plan to employ in the future to further this impact?

Response: I’ve been helping Public Health by doing meal prep demos in the community and teaching the chemistry of cooking to public health students at the university for over 10 years. I’ll keep doing these to spread the word about healthy living and support better health for everyone.


Question: From your perspective, what do you believe is the most significant public health challenge we face today?

Response: From my perspective, a significant public health challenge is ensuring that children and busy moms possess the know-how and resources to effortlessly prepare healthy meals. By teaching them practical cooking skills and extending support, we can help families prioritize nutrition despite their hectic schedules.



Question: Do you have a favorite quote or mantra that inspires you? If so, what is it and why does it resonate with you?

Response: “She believed she could, so she did” — This quote empowers me to believe in myself and the power of my dreams.


Question: Outside of your work as a chef, how do you like to spend your spare time?

Response: In my spare time, I volunteer at my son’s school and enjoy outdoor adventures such as nature walks, reading while sunbathing and picnic in the park.
